Are You Breathing Efficiently?
The breath or breathing is not a topic not regularly talked about in our daily lives. This is just something we do naturally right? While you are correct, breathing is an automatic function of our bodies, there is a more efficient way to breathe that gives us up to 600% more oxygen!
We are all born knowing how to fully engage the diaphragm in order to take deep, rejuvenating breaths, also called breathing diaphragmatically or belly breathing. However, as we grow older, through pain, fear and stress, we lose the habit. This results in unconscious breathing, breathing with the muscles of the upper chest.
Conscious diaphragmatic breathing feeds our bodies up to 600% more oxygen because the lungs are cone-shaped and about 70% of the alveoli, the oxygen receptors, live at the base of our lungs. Only when we inhale completely with the diaphragm muscle do we pull the air deeply enough into the lungs to reach this concentration. Otherwise, for the average chest breather, the few receptors at the top of the lungs must supply nourishment and waste removal to the entire body.
Other important functions of the breath include:
- Warms air to match your body temperature and moisturizes it to the humidity level your body needs.
- Delivers oxygen to the cells in your body.
- Removes waste, toxins, and carbon dioxide from the body when you exhale.
- Protects your airways from harmful substances and irritants.
The most exciting part of diaphragmatic breathing is you are fully in control of it. No one can take it from you, so why not give yourself the greatest gift of all and learn how to connect to the breath that has been in you all along.
